New play equipment at Catherine Junior

A CITY junior school is preparing to unveil some new play equipment for pupils to enjoy.

Catherine Junior School, in Brandon Street, Belgrave, has built a new playground next to the school, and has screened work from pupils ready for a ‘big reveal’ on Tuesday 30 June.

The new playground will include a climbing frame, a trim trail, climbing wall and tunnels. There is also a seating area.

The school saved up the cash to pay for the £100,000 project, with Leicester City Council providing the land.

Members of the Leicester Riders basketball team will attend the launch, along with local boxer Rendall Munroe.

Headteacher Joy Denning said: “We’re really excited about revealing the new playground to our pupils. Our school building had to be completely rebuilt after a fire in 2012 caused serious damage. Now, with this new playground, we’ll have modern new facilities outside to match those inside our fantastic new building.

“It’s also been a great incentive for pupils to behave well, because we’ve held a competition for the best-behaved class to be the first ones on the new equipment!”

Cllr Sarah Russell, assistant city mayor responsible for children, young people and schools, said: “I’m very pleased that we were able to provide some land to the school to support them in this project. This is a school that’s been through a lot in the last few years and has coped really well with adversity – now it’s time for the pupils here to enjoy playtimes in their brand new play area.”

The school will celebrate the opening of the playground with an afternoon of traditional games such as Maypole dancing, cricket, rounders and croquet.
