Children in care get awards at celebration event

CHILDREN and young people who are in care have been rewarded for their progress and achievements at the city council’s annual Celebrating Success awards ceremony.
The ceremony, which was held recently (23 Jan) at De Montfort Hall, also rewarded care leavers for their achievements, and focused on recognising the barriers some children and young people have overcome to make progress in their lives.
More than 100 young people attended the event, with awards in categories including educational progress, extra-curricular achievements and personal successes. Every child who attended won an award.
Deputy city mayor Cllr Sarah Russell, who leads on children, young people and schools, said: “This is always a wonderful event. Like all parents, we want to celebrate the successes of the children and young people in our care.
“For many of these young people, life will already have been tough and they’ll have had to overcome considerable barriers to get where they are, which makes their achievements all the more remarkable and worthy of celebration.
“I congratulate each and every one of them.”
Awards were handed out by Cllr Russell, the Lord Mayor Cllr Rashmikant Joshi, and by members of the Leicester Riders and Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
Many of the children who attended also form part of the Children In Care Council, which helps to plan the annual Celebrating Success event.
The Children in Care Council also meets regularly with council leaders to discuss how services can be improved for young people in care.
