Secondary school celebrates good Ofsted result

A CITY secondary school has been officially rated ‘good’ by Ofsted, with its 16 to 19 study programme rated as outstanding.

St Paul’s Catholic School, in Evington, was praised by inspectors for its improved teaching, broad curriculum and ‘consistently good’ behaviour of pupils.

During their visit last month (Jan), inspectors praised the headteacher for his ‘clear vision’, and said senior leaders had improved the school significantly since the previous inspection.

They said teachers at St Paul’s had a good knowledge of their subjects, and pupils frequently respond to questions with detailed answers, without further prompting.

Inspectors were also impressed with the behaviour of pupils, who were ‘courteous, polite and respectful.’

Sixth-form provision at the school was singled out for particular praise. It was rated as outstanding, with students making ‘very strong progress’ and leaders ‘relentless in their promotion of academic excellence.’

Headteacher Neil Lockyer said: “It is always very heartening when any visitors to our school recognise the willingness, positive attitudes and hard work of our young people, and the great commitment, determination and care of our staff.

“It was also really good to see that Ofsted are now focusing much more on the quality and appropriateness of the curriculum as a way of improving the life chances of young people. This has always been incredibly important to us at St Paul’s, so we were delighted that the inspectors recognised this and agreed with us.

“As pleased as we are with this inspection outcome, we continue to strive relentlessly to provide an exceptional Catholic education for all of our young people.”

Deputy city mayor Cllr Sarah Russell, who leads on education, said: “My congratulations go to everyone associated with St Paul’s on a great result. To have the sixth form provision singled out as outstanding is particularly impressive.

“This takes the number of local authority schools rated good or outstanding in Leicester to 93 out of 103 – which means 90 per cent of our schools are now good or outstanding.”
