Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that CVDs are responsible for 17.9 million lives each year. CVDs are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease and other conditions.

CVDs are largely attributed to lifestyle however there are pockets of the population at greater risk such as South Asian or Black minorities and those in deprived communities. Modifiable risk factors include unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, excess weight, tobacco consumption, alcohol abuse and stress.
