1270-1273 ALEXANDER le DEBONAIR.
1270-1273 ALEXANDER le DEBONAIR.
(8)
In several M.S. Rolls of the mayors the name of "Jordain Wardeston" is given as mayor for 1270. Thompson places him under 1268, whilst Miss Bateson wisely omits him altogether. The name Wardeston never occurs in the local records of this early date, and it is doubtful if such a man existed and was ever mayor of Leic. His name is therefore omitted in this roll. Alexander le Debonair who appears to have followed Rodington was an energetic burgess. He was admitted into the gild merchant in 1242-3, was one of the jurats 1253, deputy mayor 1257, and according to the records resided in the south quarter 1271. He died about 1290 leaving a daughter, Cecilia.
(King Henry III died at Bury St. Edmunds 16 November 1272. Edward I, his son and successor, crowned 19 August 1274).
