1338 WILLIAM de CLOUNE

1338 WILLIAM de CLOUNE,

(35)

(Merchant).

A wealthy merchant and a man of considerable influence in his day. He entered the gild merchant at the special request of the lord earl in September 1318, was for several years a bailiff of Leic., and M.P. in 1332. With Agnes, his wife, he is mentioned as one of the plaintiffs in a Fine 18 Edward II (1324), re lands in Brantyngthorp (Bromkinsthorpe). His name disappears from the local records about 1343, but members of his family were living here later. William de Cloune, the benevolent abbot of Leic. 1345~1377, was doubtless one of his sons.
