1601   WILLIAM ROWES, (Vintner).

(202)

Parentage and ancestry unknown; born about 1556, enrolled a freeman of the borough 1578-9 as a yeoman, joining the corporate body soon afterwards. He was chosen a chamberlain 1584, an alderman 10 March 1588 and a coroner in 1592.

According to the Hall Book of the period he "de'parted this life on Whitsondaye in the night (1603) and (was) buried att the olde (Trinity) hospitall." A grave, believed to have been his, was uncovered during restoration work in the chapel of Trinity hospital about forty years ago. By his will, dated 12 June 1603 and proved in the P.C.C., London, the same year, he left money to supply the poor of Leic. with coals.
