1640 WILLIAM STANLEY, (Mercer).

Eldest son of Wm. Stanley of Leic., mercer, by his wife Mary, daughter of AId. William Morton, and a des~ cendant of Sir John Stanley, K.G., Lord Keeper of Ireland 1385. He was baptized at St. Martin's 25 March 1598, was admitted a freeman 1621~2, elected one of the forty~eight councillors 1624, a chamberlain 1628, later an alderman; again mayor in 1648 and M.P. for the borough 1654 to 1659. Like many of his colleagues he took a prominent part during the Civil Wars on the side of the Parliament. He married Mary, daughter of Humphrey Alsop of Markfield, co. Leic., by whom, who died in 1682, he had a large family.

AId. Wm. Stanley was buried at St. Martin's 25 August 1665. His will was proved at Leic. the same year.
