1692 JOHN BROKESBY, (Mercer).

 

The second son of Obadiah Brokesby of Stoke Golding, co. Leic., where he was baptized 7 November 1639; was apprenticed to his uncle, Nehemiah Brokesby of Leic., mercer, admitted a freeman 24 September 1662, joined the corporation 1666 and elected an alderman in 1680. He married at St. Margaret's 5 February 1663A Mary, daughter of Jonathan Cook, and by her, who died in 1708, had a large family of eight sons and five daugh~ ters (registered at St. Martin's). One of his younger sons, Rev. Abel Brokesby, became rector of Swithland in 1700 and died in 1735.

 

AId. John Brokesby was buried at St. Martin's 3 December 1723, aged eighty~seven. His will was proved at Leic. shortly after his decease.

The Brokesbys of Stoke Golding entered their Pedi~ gree at the Visitation of co. Leic. 1682~3 and recorded these Arms :-Barry nebulee of six argent and gules, on a canton gules a mullet pierced or. Crest :-A boar's head and neck couped sable. Plate 4. These arms are similar to those of the Brokesbys of Melton Mowbray.
