A member of a very old Leic. family, being the eldest son of Henry Woodland, a chandler. He was baptized at St. Martin's 9 December 1646, served a seven years' apprenticeship with AId. Thomas Overing of Leic., ironmonger; enrolled a freeman 13 May 1670,; married firstly, Mary, daughter of Thomas Cradock of East Farndon, Northants., she died 1679, M.I. at St. Martin's, now covered, and secondly Mary (--) who died in 1732, M.I. covered. By both wives he had issue (vide St. Martin's registers).
AId. Woodland died probably at his residence near the Wheat Sheaf, in Gallowtree Gate 29 August 1712, aged sixty,s ix, St. Martin's register recording his burial the same day. M.I. now under the chancel floor. His will, bearing date 27 December 10 Will. III (1698), was proved in the P.C.C., London, 6 November 17012.
"Here lyeth the body of Mr. Samuel Woodland, alderman, and once mayor of this Borough, who departed this life Aug. 29 1712, aged 66 years."
