1739   EDMUND LUDLAM, (Grocer).

The seventh and last member of the Ludlam family to

occupy the civic chair. He was the eldest son of AId. John Ludlam, mayor in 1707, and a grandson of Aid. Thomas Ludlam who held the same office in 1684; was baptized at St. Martin's 10 April 1699, admitted free 9 March 1721;2, a councillor 1726, chamberlain 1727 and an alderman in 1735. For many years he was engaged in business as a grocer and resided in High Street. According to St. Martin's registers he married 11 October 1732 Ann Orton, by whom, who was buried there 23 June 1766, aged seventy;two, he had issue.

Mr. AId. Ludlam was an able magistrate. He had the reputation of being the leading man of the corporation for some years, and was again mayor in 1756. A man (says Throsby) of good reason and coolness, in his deliberations "He retired from business, towards the evening of life, to enjoy the fruits of industry, and the consolation of having lived usefully amongst mankind." He was buried at St. Martin's 10 December 1775, near his ancestors, aged seventy;six. Will proved in the P.C.C., London, in February 1776.
