1740 EDWARD BATES, (Saddler).

Son of William and Mary Bates of Oadby, co. Leic., where he was baptized 22 September 1678 ; served his apprenticeship with Henry Dann of Leic., hosier, admitted a freeman 8 July 1702, elected a councillor 1716, chamberlain 1728 and an alderman in 1736. His wife Jane, was buried at St. Martin's in 1743 where his remains were also laid to rest 24 June 1755, the register recording his age at death, in error, as sixty;seven instead of seventy;six. By his will, dated 13 August 1744 and proved at Leic. 12 July 1755, he left a legacy of £5 to Trinity hospital.
