1759   NICHOLAS THROSBY, (Tailor).

(334)   A younger son of Robert and Ann Throsby of Anstey,

co. Leic., and descended from the ancient family of Throsby or Thoresby of Yorkshire, whose arms are

recorded as :-Argent, a chevron between three lions rampant sable. Plate 6. He was born at Anstey in 1699 and baptized there; apprenticed to Wm. Taylor of Leic., tailor, enrolled a freeman 21 February 1726~7, joined the corporation about 1735, a chamberlain in 1746 and a churchwarden of St. Martin's in 1752. He married firstly in 1727 Jane, daughter of Clement Stretton of Leic., by whom he had four children, and secondly at St. Nicholas', Leic., 2 October 1736 Martha Mason, and by her had two sons and two daughters. The eldest son of the second marriage, John Throsby, born 21 December 1740, was the distinguished antiquary and historian and the author of several volumes of local history.

During the mayoralty of AId. Throsby, 12 November 1759, the corporation entertained the Duke of Grafton, the Hon. Col. Nassau and other officers of the Suffolk Militia then stationed at Leic., at a feast held at the "New Exchange." History tells us that this was one of the most inebriating feasts ever witnessed in Leic., all those attending being "levelled with the mighty power of wine."

Mr. AId. Throsby was buried at St. Martin's 10 November 1782, aged eighty~three. His M.I. on the south wall of the church states that "Religion taught him to look towards the peaceful regions of Eternity." His will, dated 7 May 1782, was proved at Leic. 25 November 1782 by his son John, the sole executor. Mrs. Martha Throsby, widow of this alderman, who had lived in five reigns, died at the advanced age of ninety~seven, 6 October 1797, and was buried near her husband at St. Martin's. Of her it is recorded that she was constant in her devotional exercise, and it has been computed that she attended the public service of God in St. Martin's church at least 20,000 times.
