1769 3 Feb. JOHN GAMBLE, (Grocer).

The Gambles were living at Willoughby Waterless in the middle of the seventeenth century. The above,named gentleman, son of Thomas and Mary Gamble of that place, was born 20 April and baptized there 19 May 1721. Like many of his predecessors, he came to Leic. in his youth to acquire a professional career, and having completed a seven years' apprenticeship with Henry Erpe of Leic., grocer, was enrolled a freeman 19 May 1743, joining the corporation soon afterwards and filling various offices later. He resided for some years in Highcross Street, then an important business thorough, fare. His marriage with Sarah Topleys of St. Peter's parish, Derby, is recorded in the register of Osmaston, co. Derby, 11 April 1743. Issue four sons and five daughters. Descendants still living.

Mr. AId. Gamble was a man of considerable wealth,

possessing, besides freehold property at Leic. and Willoughby Waterless, some estates in cos. Derby and Surrey. After his retirement from business and civic life about 1782, he returned to his native parish Willoughby Waterless. Owing to ill health he took up his temporary residence at Buxton where he died 23 September 1789, aged sixty,nine. M.I. at St. Martin's, Leic. His will, dated at Willoughby Waterless 21 December 1787 with a codicil 15 May 1788, was proved in the P.C.C., London, 14 October 1789.
