Son of William Bishop of Grimston, co. Leic., and a nephew of AId. James Bishop, mayor in 1782. He was born at Grimston and baptized there 30 June 1755, purchased his freedom 17 January 1780, joined the corporation soon afterwards, was a joint chamberlain in 1782 and later sworn an alderman. At the death of his uncle in 1803, he succeeded to the business of the Three Crowns Hotel ; married twice, firstly at St. Peter's, Nottingham, 31 August 1780 Sarah, daughter of Isaac Cook, gent., of that town, by whom, who died in 1787, he had six sons and two daughters, descendants living, and secondly at St. Mary's, Nottingham, 26 November 1788 Tabitha, daughter of Richard Bonington, gent., of that town, she died 21 July 1840, aged eighty-four, and had by her a son Richard, born in 1789, and four daughters.
Mr. AId. William Bishop died 27 November 1820, aged sixty-four, and was buried at St. Margaret's. M.L there to him and his two wives. Will, dated 18 November 1820, was proved in the P.C.C., London, 6 June 1821.
Arms of Bishop as granted in 1810 to James Bishop of Hampstead, co. Middlesex, brother of the above' named alderman, and to his descendants and the descendants of his brothers, are thus recorded at the Heralds' College. Arms :-Ermine, a cross patonce voided gules, in chief two roses of the last, barbed and seeded vert. Crest :-On a wreath of the colours, a greyhound courant charged on the body with a cross patonce between two roses gules, barbed and seeded vert. Plate 6, The arms on the mural tablet in St. Margaret's church to AId. William Bishop, 1820, do not agree in all details with this Grant. At the foot of the tablet is added the motto of Chelmsford School:-LABOR VINCIT OMNIA.
