1823 THOMAS YATES

1823 THOMAS YATES, (Gentleman).

(392)

According to the Burgess roll, this gentleman, who does not appear to have been engaged in business pursuits, was the only son of John and Ann Yates of Leic., and was descended from a branch of the family connected with the borough for several centuries. He was born 2 October 1774, and baptized at St. Margaret's the same day, was admitted a free burgess 13 December 1800; was a member of the forty, eight and joint chamberlain in 1806, and retired with the old body in December 1835. We gather from the local records that he married Susanna, daughter of Edward Swan of Leic., but presumably had no family. After leaving the corporation he lived for several years in retirement. In 1843 he was registrar of births, etc., for Leic., a position he held until his death at the age of seventy-four years 17 June 1849.
