1852         JOHN MANNING, (Grocer).

According to the Leic. Apprentice book he was a son of Samuel Manning of Northampton, formerly of Leic., and was born at Leic. The entry of his baptism is recorded at St. Margaret's 21 March 1791. He was apprenticed to Wm. Sultzer of Leic., draper, 10 February 1804 for the usual term of seven years, a premium of £20 being paid, but does not appear to have followed that vocation. For many years he carried on business in High Street as a grocer and cheese factor.

Mr. Manning was admitted a freeman of the borough 5 September 1817, joined the new reformed corpora, tion 26 December 1835, being returned to the council for St. Martin's Ward in the liberal interest, later represent, ing Middle St. Margaret's Ward; was elected an alderman 10 February 1854. He married twice and had a numerous family by his first wife, two of his sons settling in Natal. Retiring from business and the corporation about 1862 he went to reside at Ash House near Whit, church, Salop, the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Neild, where he died 13 January 1869, aged seventy- seven. His remains were conveyed to Leic. a few days later and laid to rest at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. there to him and his second wife, Janette, who predeceased him by sixteen days. Administration of his effects was granted at Shrewsbury 27 December 1876 to John Manning of Nottingham, gentleman, the son and one of the next of kin. Effects sworn under £50
