Son of John Underwood of Leic. where he was born in 1800; admitted a freeman 13 May 1834, elected a councillor 1 November 1846 for West St. Mary's Ward, again mayor 1857, a J.P. 1858 and an alderman 26 June 1862. He married and left issue.

Ald. Underwood died, after a long and protracted illness, at Hastings, co. Sussex, leaving issue, 14 February 1867, aged sixty~seven, and his remains, having been conveyed to Leic., were, by permission of the Home Secretary, laid to rest in St. Mary's churchyard 20 February, where those of his wife, who died in 1854, were already resting. M.I. there. His will was proved at Leic. 19 March 1867 by the oaths of Arthur Underwood of Leic., hosier, the son, John Henry Wilson of Bicknell, Berks., farmer, and Stephen Dudgeon Stretton of Leic., warehouseman, the executors. Effects sworn under £6,000.
