Eldest son of William Weston Stretton of Leic. and descended from the ancient family of Stretton seated at Leire, co. Leic., in the reign of Henry VIII. He was born at Leic. 8 April and baptized at St. Martin's 7 May 1827, admitted a freeman of the borough 19 August 1859, elected a councillor 1 November 1868 for West St. Mary's Ward, an alderman 9 November 1877 and ap, pointed a magistrate 1880. He married 1 January 1850 Julia Stanbury, only daughter of Richard Osborn of Brighton, by whom, who survived him, he had issue. Descendants still living.
AId. Stretton was again elected mayor 30 November 1878 in succession to AId. Grimsley, deceased. He retired from the corporation in 1888 and latterly resided at Great Glen, Leics., where he died 16 May 1891, aged sixty,four. His remains were interred at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. At a meeting of the town council, 30 November 1878, AId. Clement Stretton, ex~mayor, was elected to complete the year of office rendered vacant through the sudden death of AId. Grimsley.
