Son of John Green of Market Harborough where he was born 1 August 1816 and descended from the Greens of Leic., his father, a freeman of the borough 1796, died in 1854.

Mr. George Green, the subject of our notice, was first apprenticed to a well known Leic. Printer named Winks, but he did not remain long in that vocation; leaving it for a corn business at Market Harborough.

In 1859 he ventured as a Boot and Shoe Manufacturer at Leic. in the early days of the trade, and founded the Company now known as Geo. Green & Sons, Ltd. He became a member of the town council 1 November 1870 as one of the representatives for North St. Margaret's Ward, was elected an alderman 9 November 1891, high bailiff of the borough 1892,94, appointed a J.P. 1895 and retired from the corporation in 1900 j married twice, had issue seven sons and one daughter, all of whom survived him. Five of his sons went to New Zealand, where the eldest, born 1838, is now one of the "Old Settlers" of that Dominion.

Mr. George Green died at Lansdowne House, Stoney' gate, Leic., 19 August 1911, aged ninety,five, and was buried at the Welford Road Cemetery. M.I. there. Will proved at Leic. 28 September 1911 by Johanna Emily (EIsa) Wilhelmina Green, widow, the executrix. Effects £36,638 18s. 2d.
