Belgrave Hall

Belgrave Hall

Belgrave Hall provides an oasis of peace and quiet in a busy city. The hall is in the midst of two acres of serene walled gardens that are open to the public during special events.

Further information

Brief history

It was built in the early 18th century, in what was then a small village three miles from the town of Leicester. Now city traffic passes, almost unnoticed, just beyond the garden walls. It has changed hands many times but the owners have always played a major role in the economic, social and charitable life of the community.

Edmund Cradock, a 'nouveau riche' hosiery merchant, built the hall between 1709 and 1713 and died soon after its completion.

John Ellis, who purchased Belgrave Hall in 1845 and his family were noted for their good work in the community. Ellis, a wealthy businessman, was responsible for bringing the railways to Leicester in 1833.

Access

For wheel chair users and those with mobility problems the Hall has full access to the ground floor with an accessible toilet available.

On street parking is available, including a few places directly in front of the hall. We recommend contacting the museum in advance to reserve a parking place for Blue Badge holders, in particular on event days where demand for spaces can be high.

The gardens are fully accessible via ramps, though some paths maybe too narrow for larger wheelchairs. Also the paths are covered gravel and some wheelchair users may have difficulty getting around them because of this.

Wedding and venue hire

The intimate setting of Belgrave Hall is available for small weddings from summer 2014. The hall and gardens can be hired for private functions and business meetings.

Opportunities to hold corporate and commercial events are also available. Special rates are offered for charities and community groups.
