Bikes up for grabs in Easter competitions at city markets

Published on 21 March 2016

LEICESTER Market’s traditional Easter Bonnet competition takes place on Saturday (26 March) – and there are some fabulous prizes up for grabs for the best young designers.

Three winners from two age groups – age six and under, and age seven to 12 – will receive a brand new bike, if their bonnets impress the panel of judges.

Youngsters are asked to take their homemade bonnets to the Market Square between 11am and 12 noon on Saturday to register for the competition.

The traditional Easter Bonnet parade will then take place at 12.30pm, giving the young designers the chance to model their headwear.

Judging and prize-giving will take place between 12.30pm and 2.30pm, with everyone taking part going home with an Easter egg.

Running alongside the Easter bonnet competition will be a medieval fayre, helping to mark the first anniversary of King Richard III’s reinterment.

A range of activities – including finger braiding, cookery and demonstrations of medieval armoury – will take place between 10am and 3pm.

For more information, contact Leicester Market on (0116) 223 2372.

Not to be outdone, Beaumont Market at the Beaumont Shopping Centre will also be running an Easter competition – with two bikes up for grabs.

Children aged 10 and under are invited to design an Easter egg, using a template that can be picked up from the Beaumont Market office.

Completed pictures can be handed in to the market office, which is next to the Keeper’s Lodge pub, before judging takes place – or can be brought to the market between 10am and 11.30am on Good Friday (25 March).

To be in with a chance of winning a bike, all entrants must be at Beaumont Market at 1pm on Good Friday for the judges’ announcement.

Two lucky winners – one aged between seven and 10, and one aged six or under – will each receive a bike.

Beaumont Market’s Good Friday event will also include a Family Fun Day, with free face-painting and have-a-go circus skills on offer.

For more information, please call Beaumont Market on 0116 223 2378.

All the prizes for both competitions have been kindly donated by the market traders.
