The London Organising Committee of the Olympic
and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) chose Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
to stage a full dress rehearsal on Friday 20th April to test the
operations around the Olympic Torch Relay.
Why did this happen?
The key reason was to test the convoy, crew and communications procedures in
advance of the national 70-day torch relay*, which takes place from 19th May until 27th July.
The rehearsal route in Leicester on Friday 20th April
- Started at the National Space Centre at around 7.12am
- then went along Belgrave Road and Loughborough Road
- crossed the Red Hill roundabout and headed towards Station Road
- arrived at Great Central Railway’s Leicester North Station around 8.15am and left soon after.
The impact on the areas along the rehearsal route
The convoy's journey lasted for around 60 mins from
start to finish. As expected, it caused some minor disruption to those
areas on the route.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
We worked closely with LOCOG and local partners to minimise any impact
on all areas along the route.
