Turret Gateway: Description of the Ancient Monument

The Turret Gateway is located on Castle View, just off The Newarke. It is a Grade I Listed Building, and is within the Castle Gardens Conservation Area.

The Turret Gateway was built ca.1422-3 as the south entrance to the inner bailey of the Castle. It is in ruins although a considerable amount of walling remains. It is constructed of stone rubble with four-centred archway. The Gateway is now a two-storey building of sandstone with an arched gate and a portcullis chamber above. The original third storey was destroyed in an election riot in 1932. Fireplaces are visible on the upper floor. The stonework on the arch was restored during the 1980s.
