New Penalty Charges Apply
From the 31 March 2008 a new national system of differential penalty charges comes into use for parking offences. This means that a Higher Rate of Penalty Charge is payable for more serious parking offences and a Lower Rate of Penalty Charge is payable for less serious parking offences.
Penalty charges are designed to encourage motorists to comply with parking regulations. Previously, a penalty charge notice (PCN) was £60.00 which was reduced to £30.00 if paid within 14 days discount period. New civil parking enforcement regulations has come into effect from the 31st March 2008, and from this date penalty charges will be more proportional to the seriousness of the contravention.
For example, parking on yellow lines incurs a higher penalty than overstaying in a pay and display bay. The new proportional penalty charges will mean higher penalties of of £70.00 will be charged for more serious contraventions, while a lower penalty of £50.00 will be charged for less serious contraventions. Both the new penalties will be subject to 50% reduction if they are paid within 14 days discount period. A full list of contraventions and the appropriate level of penalty charge can be viewed below.
For parking penalties at the higher rate the charge is:-
£70 which is reduced to £35 if it is paid not later than the last day of the period of 14 days beginning with the date on which the Penalty Charge Notice is served.
For parking penalties at the lower rate the charge is:-
£50 which is reduced to £25 if it is paid not later than the last day of the period of 14 days beginning with the date on which the Penalty Charge Notice is served.See the attached document below for further details.
