The restoration project was funded jointly by Leicester City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, who awarded a grant of £759,000 in 2004.
Work commenced on site in the summer of 2005 and the Visitor Centre was officially opened in June 2006.
The project consisted number of elements including;
- The creation of a new Visitor Centre
- The creation of 100 memorial plaques dedicated to notable individuals buried at the cemetery. Find out more about the memorial plaques.
- Resurfacing of pathways around the site
- New fencing along University Road
- Conservation work carried out on a number of headstones around the site.
- New tree and shrub planting around the cemetery
