What is a hate incident and/or crime?
These incidents and/ or crime may involve physical attacks, verbal abuse, harassment, damage to your property, bullying or graffiti.
Hate incident and/or crime is any offence committed because a person is seen to be different because of their:

Disability

Gender or gender identity

Race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins

Religion
-
Sexual orientation
Hate incident and/ or crime can take many forms including:

Verbal abuse or insults - offensive leaflets and posters, abusive gestures, dumping of rubbish outside homes or through letter boxes, and bullying at school or in the workplace

Threat of attack – including offensive letters, abusive or obscene telephone calls, groups hanging around to intimidate and unfounded, malicious complaints

Physical attacks – such as physical assault, damage to property, offensive graffiti, neighbour disputes and arson

Why should I report hate incidents and/or crime?
All hate incidents and crimes should be reported. By reporting these incidents and crimes, you will enable the police, local councils, housing associations etc. to build up patterns of behaviour locally, and highlight areas of concern within your community. This will help the partners understand the extent of hate incident and/ or crime in your local area so they can better respond to it.
But more importantly, you can get the support you may need and help to ensure that the behaviour stops.

Who can report an incident?
Anybody can complete the Hate Incident Monitoring Form.
If you have experienced or are aware of anyone who has experienced a hate incident then we want to know about it. An incident report can be completed anonymously you do not have to identify yourself, but if you want us to contact you it is essential that you leave a contact number or address.
If you represent a particular agency then this should be stated in section five of the form. You can report an incident even if you do not have all of the information requested on the form, as any information that you can provide may be valuable.

There are lots of ways you can report a hate incident and/ or crime, whether you have been a victim, a witness, or you are reporting on behalf of someone else:

Partnership Working
Leicester City Council works closely in partnership with the police and other agencies to prevent all forms of hate incidents & crime by taking action to support & protect victims.
In partnership, the council encourages anyone who is the victim of, or witness to, hate incident or crime to report it immediately.
