Higher Education

The Awards, Grants & Loans Service administers applications from students seeking financial support for attendance on higher education courses. It is responsible for assessing their eligibility for and entitlement to financial support.

We receive approximately 3000 new full-time applications each year and have approximately 4000 continuing students. Initial forms are vetted against statutory regulations to check for eligibility in principle. Once that is established, a financial form is completed with income details for the previous tax year and a means tested assessment made of the level of entitlement. Students are sent a financial notification and a copy is sent electronically to the Student Loans Company (SLC).

Where information is not complete, either a provisional or a non-means tested assessment is made pending receipt of documentary evidence.

Student support consists of:
1) loans for living costs
2) grants for tuition fees
3) grants for living costs

We process a number of applications each year for students wishing to claim a loan for part-time study. These cases are considered using similar eligibility criteria but a different means test. The student completes the loan request form as part of the application and it is sent by us to the SLC.

We also deal with a relatively small number applications from postgraduate or part-time disabled students. They are considered against a set of eligibility criteria but there is no means test. Further information on Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) is available here.

Students going abroad as an integral part of their course can also claim help with travel. We need to see tickets/receipts. We can also reimburse medical insurance as part of the travel grant.

You should apply to the Leicester City Council if you or your parents pay Council Tax to Leicester City Council.
