Who can use a public access computer?

Anyone. You simply need to be a member of the library.

How much does it cost?

Use of the computers and access to the Internet is free?. You just pay for any printouts. Go to Library Charges for more details.

How do I book a computer?

We use a computer booking system called NetLoan. You can book a computer in any of our libraries using any of the following methods:

  • From a booking computer (available in a number of libraries - please check with the library).

  • Direct log on - walk up to and log on to an available computer.

  • While you are using a library computer you can book further times via the Book-a-PC shortcut icon on the computer desktop

  • At  www.leicester.gov.uk/libraries

You can book up to a week in advance. Find the library nearest you.

Can I save information?

Yes. You can save to a CD-R disc and to a USB Memory Stick/Flash Drive.

Our public computers do not have floppy disk drives.

Can I use e-mail?

Yes. You can use any web-based e-mail service e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo etc.

Will I be trained to use the computer?

There will be no formal training but staff will be happy to give simple guidance. There are often 'basic computing' and 'Learn to use the Internet' courses in most libraries. Staff can provide information on where to obtain training.

What can I do on the computer?

Use the Internet, send e-mails, produce posters and leaflets, write letters, design and produce your CV etc.

Do you protect against computer viruses?

There is anti-virus software on all our computers. Once you put a CD or Memory Stick in the computer, it is automatically checked for viruses.

What is your code of conduct for computer users?

Computer users are asked to agree to our code of conduct. This details standards of acceptable use of computers. Read our code of conduct agreement.

For your comfort and convenience, the libraries have the following:

  • High backed adjustable computer operator chairs
  • Purpose built computer tables
  • Copy stands (please ask at counter)
  • Footrests (please ask at counter)

We recommend that when using computers you should:

  • Take a 5-minute break every half hour
  • Adjust your chair to a comfortable working height
  • Place any material you need to refer to near the screen, on the side most comfortable to you
  • Allow yourself enough work space
  • Allow room for books or forms alongside the computer terminal
  • Give yourself enough leg space
  • Adjust monitors to avoid glare on the screen
