Domestic Bonfires
We will investigate complaints regarding bonfires on domestic premises if we think they could constitute a Statutory Nuisance.
It is not illegal to have a domestic bonfire unless the activity is either unreasonable in terms of the material being burnt, or there is some degree of repetition.
Remember that disposal methods far less environmentally damaging than bonfires are available –
1. Composting – most garden and kitchen waste, even cardboard and paper, can be recycled into compost.
2. Recycling – household waste should certainly not be burned on a bonfire. Many items can be recycled.
3. Collection – the City Council will collect green garden waste and other bulky items for free. Book a bulk collection online or call 0116 252 7002.
For an information leaflet on bonfires, whether you wish to have one or are bothered by one, contact the Pollution Team on 252 6438.

Commercial and Industrial Bonfires
We will investigate complaints regarding bonfires on commercial and industrial premises if we think they could constitute a Statutory Nuisance.
Waste produced during the course of normal business activity should be disposed of in an appropriate manner. Disposal by burning is not permissible and will also be referred to the Environment Agency for investigation.
If you wish to make a complaint about a commercial or industrial bonfire, please contact our customer service line or the Environment Agency.
