Conservation and Design

The council's Conservation and Design staff aim to achieve quality in the environment by supplying expert input into the planning of new development and other City Council schemes; by supplying advice on the design of buildings, landscape and major development areas. For further advice and information, contact the council's Conservation Team.

Built environment

We are responsible for Leicester's 24 conservation areas and over 350 listed buildings; we provide archaeological advice relating to development proposals; and we provide advice and information about design for disabled people.

Natural environment

We carry out a wide range of landscape and nature conservation projects; we supply advice on proposals which affect biodiversity and wildlife; we advise on proposals for works to trees in conservation areas and other protected trees; we will investigate unauthorised works to such trees; and we prepare and monitor tree preservation orders. Please also see our Frequently Asked Questions about protected trees.

The Quality of Leicester

The conservation team also was responsible for preparing 'The Quality of Leicester', which can be purchased from the Council, or from the Tourist Information Centre.
