John of Gaunt's Cellar: Description of the Monument

This 15th century cellar runs under a courtyard adjacent to the Castle Hall.

A long dark, partly subterranean chamber, approximately 14 metres by 6 metres, it is built of large sandstone blocks.

The ceiling is fine ashlar masonry with a four-centred tunnel vault, and there is a beaten earth floor. Many of the ashlar blocks display masons' marks.
