The Protection of Trees

These pages include information and advice about the protection of trees. Trees are protected if subject to a Tree Preservation Order, and most trees in conservation areas are also protected. We also seek to protect trees as much as possible during the development process.

Tree Preservation Orders

Trees in Conservation Areas

  • Most trees in Conservation Areas are protected. This page gives information on applying to carry out works to trees, and to report unauthorised works.

Trees on development sites

  • Supplementary Planning Guidance: Tree Protection. The successful protection of trees on development sites in the city is the aim of Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) which was adopted by the City Council in 2003.

  • Guidance for developers. Our requirements for developers to provide detailed information about trees on development sites, which will be used to identify trees for removal and retention, and to guide the layout of the development.

Please contact our Planning Officer (Trees) for advice or further information.
