To end your tenancy you will need to fill in a Notice of Termination / Notice to Quit form. You will need to give a minimum of four weeks notice, with your tenancy ending on a Monday. You must also provide us with a forwarding address and the reasons for the termination.
Where there is a joint tenancy agreement, a notice to terminate a tenancy by one tenant will end the tenancy of all joint tenants.
Once you have completed and returned your Termination of Tenancy Notice to your neighbourhood housing office, we will acknowledge your request in writing.
Things to do before moving out
You will need to return the keys of your property to the neighbourhood housing office by 10:00am on the day your tenancy ends. Please note:
- The property should be clear of any items, belongings and possessions
- All fixtures and fittings should be left clean, in good working order and in good condition
- ‘Vacant possession’ should be given. This means that no other person should be left in the property after you leave
Not doing this will result in being charged for costs incurred by the Council.

Ending a tenancy for someone else
If you need to terminate a tenancy for someone who has died, you need to complete and return a Termination of Tenancy form and provide a copy of the death certificate. Please note that only the next of kin can end a tenancy in these circumstances.
You are only required to give a minimum of one week’s notice when ending the tenancy of a deceased tenant. If you find it difficult to arrange clearance of the property within the one week notice period please speak to your local housing office.
