Leicester City Council insures all of its properties and will claim on its insurance in the event of repairs needing to be carried out due to fire or other damage to the building.
However, Housing Services do not insure the contents that belong to tenants. We strongly recommend that you take out content insurance to cover the cost of any damage or loss to your personal property and belongings.
Content insurance is available from a variety of different insurance companies. Whilst we cannot recommend a particular company or organisation, we can offer advice and guidance on home contents insurance. Please contact our Tenants Advice and Repairs Service for more information on (0116) 2527007.
You can make an insurance claim against the Council for damages caused by our staff to your possessions, to you or a member of your family. For example, if a Council tradesman hammers a nail into a wall and bursts a water pipe which causes flooding, the Council will be responsible for the cost of replacing any carpets that are ruined, as the tradesman would have been negligent in this case. However, there are a variety of other examples where the Council may not be negligent. For example, if a particularly bad storm lifts a tile off the roof and leads to water damage to the inside of the property (e.g. damaged carpets, furniture, clothes), the Council would not necessarily be negligent as it could not have prevented the damage from happening.
For further information on whether or not you could make an insurance claim against Leicester City Council, please telephone the Quality Control Team on (0116) 252 6217 / 6195.
