Fanny Fullagar

Fanny Fullagar plaque

FANNY FULLAGAR, Poor Law Guardian and suffragist

The Blue Plaque is located at the former Registry Office, Pocklingtons Walk, Leicester.

Fanny Fullagar (1847 – 1918) became the first woman in Leicester to become a Poor Law Guardian. She was elected in 1889 when she gained the highest number of votes in All Saints parish (later known as Newton Ward). She remained a guardian for 15 years until she was defeated by one vote in 1904. She decided not to re-stand, but to devote more of her time to other charitable causes, including the NSPCC (the local branch which she had helped to found), the RSPCA, the Leicester Society for Indigent Old Age and the St John Ambulance. Added to this was her commitment to the women's suffrage campaign for which she held a post in the Leicester and Leicestershire Women's Suffrage Society. The plaque is situated on the building in Pocklingtons Walk, which was the former Poor Law Guardians office.
