Town Hall Square: South African War Memorial

In the South African, or Boer War, between October 1899 and May 1902, Leicestershire lost over 300 men. The memorial was funded by public subscription, and was unveiled in July 1909. It is located in the corner of Town Hall Square at Every Street / Horsefair Street.

The memorial is a Grade 2 listed building (English Heritage reference 1185421). The official listing description is as follows:

"TOWN HALL SQUARE. War Memorial at North East corner of Town Hall Square. Early C20. Boar War memorial. Sculptor Crosland McClure. Consisting of low granite wall with bronze plaques of list of the dead, central squat pedestal with bronze kneeling angel in flowing robes holding sword and olive branch. At each end there is a slightly lower pedestal with partly robed bronze female figures."

The simple inscription reads:

Glory to God / Honour the dead / Peace after victory
