Custom and self-build housing
The Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 states that councils' have a duty to keep a register of individual and associations, who are interested in finding which they can custom or self-build properties on.
What is self-build and custom build?
Self-build housing usually means that you are directly involved in organising the design and construction of your new home. Custom build housing is where a builder/specialist developer is contracted by a home owner to help them create a custom built property.
There may be some overlap between the two - for example some custom build developers offer the option of a serviced plot, where you can design and build your own home as part of a larger scheme.
What is the purpose of the register?
The Government wants to enable more people to build or commission their own home. This register will provide an indication of the demand for custom and self-builds in Leicester and to allow us to develop our housing and planning policies to support the kinds of self and custom build projects that be most appropriate. We are currently working on the new Local Plan for the city which we plan to adopt by late 2017.
Register your interest
If you are interested in building your own home, you can sign up to our self-build and custom build register. By signing up you will help us find out more about the number and types of houses people would like to build in our area, helping us to plan and provide for this demand through our Local Plan.
