“Serving people at life’s key moments”
If you wish to register a birth or death, give notice of marriage or civil partnership or use the nationality checking service in Leicester, you will need to book an appointment at Leicester Register Office.
CHANGES TO OUR MARRIAGE ROOMS
From 1 January 2015 we are changing the way that the marriage rooms at the Town Hall, Leicester are booked for ceremonies.
The Oak Room (which has a capacity of 80 guests) and the Fountain Room (which has a capacity of 40 guests) will be bookable to include a hire charge for the room. The cost will be for a ½ hour slot. An additional ½ hour slot can be booked by paying for the additional ½ hour. The charges are as follows:
Monday – Friday £120
Monday – Friday £ 80
Please note this does not include the cost of any marriage certificates.
For legal reasons you will not be able to give notice of intention to marry in the Oak Room or the Fountain Room before 1 January 2015. You will be able to reserve the room of your choice with the Ceremonies Team on payment of the fee. The team will also advise you on the options available for you to enhance your ceremony. Further information on booking the Oak & Fountain Rooms will be provided by the Ceremonies Team at the time of making your booking.
The Laurel Room (which has a capacity of 6 guests) is not subject to the above changes. The fee for getting married in the Laurel Room is the national one for a register office marriage plus the cost of any certificates. From 1 January 2015 it will only be possible to have a standard ceremony in the Laurel Room.
These changes have been introduced to enable us to provide the types of service that couples now expect for their wedding.
Head of Registration & Coronial Services
The staff at the office register 9,500 births and 5,700 deaths annually. In addition around 1,000 marriage ceremonies take place within the building every year together with an increasing number of civil partnership registrations.
As part of the legal preliminaries to their wedding the citizens of the City of Leicester who wish to marry anywhere other than the Church of England must give a legal notice of their intention to marry. In the course of a year more than 2,000 notices are entered in the records of this office.
The original records of all births, deaths and marriages which have taken place in the City of Leicester since 1837 are kept at the register office. Every year approximately 12,000 certified copies are issued from these historic records.
