Unpaid council tax

If you have problems paying your council tax, you should let us know immediately. You can request to make an arrangement with us which we will consider.

We are not legally obliged to make payment arrangements, and only consider them as part of our effort to ensure all council tax payers are treated fairly and objectively.

Are you struggling to make council tax payments?

  • Council tax support will help to pay up to 80 per cent of your bill - if you are on a low income and have savings less than £6000. Pension-age support can help towards 100 per cent of your bill if you are on a low income and have savings less than £16000. Find out more on our council tax support page.
  • If you are struggling with the rise in living costs, use our website BetterOff Leicester to find out if you are entitled to any benefits or support, and information on how to find and apply for jobs.
  • If you require any further help, please call us on 0116 454 1005 before the payment is due, we are here to help.

If you are behind with your payments, we may be in touch before a reminder or summons is issued or before we ask our enforcement agents to try and collect the overdue amount on our behalf. This is to help you to take the right action before the formal recovery process continues and avoid additional costs.

Whilst this service is offered to prevent customers from falling further into arrears, it should not be relied upon. It is your responsibility to maintain the instalments due on your account in line with your bill. Failure to do so will result in recovery action being taken.

Text messages from us will show as coming from 'LeicesterCC'.

If you are concerned about any messages that you receive, please contact us on 0116 454 1005.

  • You can make a payment in full including costs or agree a payment plan by logging to your online council tax account and select ‘Set up a special payment arrangement’ or ‘make a payment’ – details of how to do this will also be on your reminder/summons.
  • If you wish to know more about the recovery process – you can find out more on our council tax recovery page.
  • Call us on 0116 454 1005 for advice and before the court hearing date to discuss the payment due.

If you have received contact from an Enforcement Agent, you should contact them directly to discuss your payment options.
