The story behind the painting
The Wollaston Family by William Hogarth was painted in 1730 and was passed down through the Leicestershire Wollaston family until it was loaned to New Walk Museum and Art Gallery 75 years ago. It has been enjoyed by generations of gallery visitors ever since.
The family are offering the painting to the nation in settlement of inheritance tax, and the City of Leicester Museums Trust has the unique opportunity to acquire it.
What's special about The Wollaston Family?
The Wollaston Family is one of William Hogarth’s most ambitious early oil paintings. Known as a ‘conversation piece’ it includes portraits of 17 people playing cards and taking tea in a sumptuous interior. We know the names and relationships of many of the sitters through a key that was made in the 18th century. In the foreground, a mischievous little pug looks straight at the viewer. This is quite possibly the painter’s own dog.
The majority of Hogarth’s paintings on public view in the UK are found in London’s national museums and institutions.
