Admissions criteria for secondary schools 2023-24

Where a school receives more applications than places available, each preference will be ranked against the schools published admissions criteria. Full details of the criteria for each city secondary school for entry in 2023-24 can be found below.

Leicester City secondary schools

Please read the criteria carefully as it will help you decide whether your child has a good chance of being offered a place at your preferred school.

Each school has a limited number of places and this is known as the published admission number (PAN). This number considers how many pupils each school can accommodate and is shown within each drop-down below.

Published admission number: 180

Where the school is oversubscribed, after the admission of pupils with an Education, Health and Care plan, priority for admission will be allocated to those children who meet the criteria set out below, in the following order of priority:

Criterion

Criterion 1: Looked after children and previously looked after children who became subject to adoption, a child arrangements order or special guardianship order immediately after being looked after.

Criterion 2. Children with a sibling attending Avanti Fields School or Krishna Avanti Primary School, Leicester at the time of application. Details of sibling to be included in the Common Application Form submitted to the Local Authority.

Criterion 3. Children who attend Krishna Avanti Primary School (Leicester) at the time of application.

Criterion 4. Children of a member of the school’s staff in either or both of the following circumstances:

a. Has been employed at the School for two or more years at the time of application; and/or

b. Was recruited to fill a vacant post for which there was a demonstrable skill shortage.

For the avoidance of doubt, “a” and “b” above do not denote an order of priority – all children falling within this category will be treated equally.

Criterion 5. Up to 15 places to Hindu children with a practicing Hindu parent who worships at the ISKCON temple in Leicester in the following order of priority:

5.1 Hindu children with a practicing Hindu parent who has taken initiation (diksha); and

5.2 Hindu children with a practicing Hindu parent who attends Sanga. 

To be included in this category, a completed supplementary information form (“SIF”) certified by a representative of the ISKCON temple in Leicester must be submitted to the School by the closing date for applications, in addition to the Common Application Form submitted to the Local Authority. Children for whom a certified SIF is not received by the closing date for applications, and children falling into this category who do not achieve a place, will be included in the next category that applies.

Criterion 6. Up to 15 Hindu children with a practicing Hindu parent. To be included in this category, a completed SIF certified by a representative of the parent’s temple must be submitted to the school by the closing date for applications. Children for whom a SIF is not received by the closing date for applications, and children falling into this category who do not achieve a place, will be included in the category 7, below.

Criterion 7. All other children. For the avoidance of doubt, geographical distances will be taken from the school’s permanent site: Manor Farm site in Thurmaston Lane, LE5 0TF.

Places will be allocated to pupils who have a statement of special educational needs or an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan which names the school before any other allocations are made.

These allocations will reduce the number of places available.

Criterion

Criterion 1: Children in the care of a local authority within England or who were previously in the care of a local authority within England (see note 1).

Criterion 2: Children who were previously in care outside of England (see  note 1).

Criterion 3: Pupils who have a serious medical condition or exceptional social or domestic needs that make it essential they attend the school requested (see note 2).

Criterion 4: Children whose home address is in the catchment area of the secondary school with a sibling at the school, who will still be on roll in years 8 – 11 when the applicant starts school (see note 3).

Criterion 5: Children whose home address is outside the catchment area of the secondary school with a sibling at the school, who will still be on roll in years 8 – 11 when the applicant starts school (see note 3).

Criterion 6: Children whose home address is in the catchment area of the secondary school (see note 4).

Criterion 7: Children who are sons / daughters of staff working at the school for at least 2 years at the time of application (see note 5).

Criterion 8: Children whose home address is outside the catchment area of the school and who have requested a place.

Tiebreaker: Within each criterion priority will be given to children living closest to the school, as measured on a straight-line basis using a geographical information system measuring from the geo-code reference point from the child’s home address to the geo-code reference point for the school.

If two applicants within a category live exactly the same distance from the school and only one place remains, the place will be offered to one applicant on the basis of lots drawn by an officer of the local authority not involved in the administration of school admissions.

Note 1: A “looked after” child is a child who is (a) in the care of a local authority in England, or (b) being provided with accommodation by a local authority in England, in the exercise of their social services function at the time of making an application to the school. A “previously looked after” child is a child who was looked after, either in England or outside* of England, but ceased to be because they were adopted or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order.

Note 2: All schools in Leicester have experience in dealing with children with diverse social and medical needs. However, there may be exceptional cases where there are compelling reasons why it is essential they attend the school requested. For further details please refer to the Leicester Scheme.

Note 3: Sibling means a brother or sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister or child of the parent/carer’s partner. In every case, the child must be living in the same family unit at the same address. Siblings must be on roll at the point of entry. In the case of twins, triplet or other children of multiple births, if the final place is offered to one child, and the remaining sibling(s) would ordinarily be refused, places will be offered to the remaining sibling(s).

Note 4: Home address” means the child’s permanent home address at the time of application. In the case of split households, it is the address of the person who receives the Child Benefit. ‘At the time of application’ means the closing date for applications. Informal accommodation arrangements with family and friends are not accepted unless there are very special circumstances and supporting proof is required. An address used for child care arrangements cannot be used as the home address for the purpose of applying for a school place

A supplementary form will need to be completed and returned directly to the school – this can be found on our website at leicester.gov.uk/admissions.

In accordance with legislation pupils with an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP) (a plan made by the Local Authority under Section 37 of the Children and Families Act 2014 which specifies the special educational provision required for a child) which names the school will be allocated a place first. This will reduce the number of places available.

Criterion 1: Catholic children who are ‘looked after’ or who were ‘previously looked after’.

Criterion 2: Catholic children.

Criterion 3: Other children who are ‘looked after’ or who were ‘previously looked after’.

Criterion 4: Catechumens, candidates and members of Eastern Christian Churches.

Criterion 5: Children of other Christian denominations whose membership is evidenced by a minister of religion.

Criterion 6: Children of other faiths whose membership is evidenced by a religious leader

Criterion 7: Any other children.

First priority within the individual criteria will be given to applications from children who attend one of the partner primary schools.

Second priority within the individual criteria will be given to applications for children who will have siblings attending the school in years 7-11 at the proposed time of admission.

A Madani schools supplementary information form will need to be completed and returned directly to the school.

After the admission of pupils with EHC plans or statements, the governing body will apply the criteria below in the order in which they are set out:

a. Looked after Muslim children and previously looked after Muslim children who meet the religious practice check.

b. Muslim children who meet the religious practice check and who have or will have a sibling in the school or the co-located girls’ school at the time of admission.

c. Muslim children who meet the religious practice check and who have a parent employed at the school for two or more years at the time of application.

d. Muslim children who meet the religious practice check. In the event of more applications than places under criteria b, c or d, priority will be given to those who have the highest scores in the religious practice check. In the event of tied scores in the religious practice check and fewer places than three applications, then places will be offered to those living closest to the school measured by the straight-line distance from the child’s home to the school.

e. Any other looked after children or previously looked after children.
