E-cigarettes or vapes

Using an E-cigarette or vape is the most effective way to quit smoking.

E-cigarettes or vapes are far less harmful than cigarettes. People who use e-cigarettes to quit smoking, combined with face-to-face support, are more likely to quit for good.

They are not recommended for non-smokers and cannot be sold to people under 18 years old.

An E-cigarette or vape is a device that allows you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke. Because they do not contain tar or carbon monoxide, they are less harmful than cigarettes; they do not contain tobacco either.

The e-liquid in vapes is 95% safer than cigarettes - tobacco smoke contains thousands of harmful chemicals; vaping can reduce your risk of cancer and other smoking-related diseases.

It also reduces other people’s exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke.

As they need to be charged it is very important to use the correct charger for them and do not leave unattended or charging overnight.

The fire risk is very small, as long as you are responsible – the fire risk due to cigarettes is far higher.

E-cigarettes can be used on their own or in combination with a nicotine replacement medication such as a nicotine patch.

Receiving regular support from your local stop smoking service will also increase your chances of quitting.
