Services delivering Sustainable Development Goals

We provide a wide range of essential services to the people, communities and businesses of the city. Many of these services are directly helping to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals.

Adults’ and children’s social care

Social care is a major area of responsibility for us and covers a wide range of services to support both adults and children. It contributes to several of the goals, including promoting wellbeing (goal 3), equality (goal 10) and safety (goal 11).

Education

We are directly responsible for many schools within the city, providing education (goal 4) and a range of support services to young people.

We also deliver adult and community learning and provide employment support services to local jobseekers – helping people to access decent work (goal 8) and get out of poverty (goal 1).

Housing

We rent out around 20,000 council houses across the city, providing good quality affordable housing (goal 1), ensuring it is maintained and providing support to tenants (goal 11).

Planning and development

We set a local planning policy to ensure that development in the city is sustainable (goal 11), addresses climate change (goal 13), supports economic development (goal 8) and protects nature (goal 15).

Recycling and waste

We provide waste and recycling services for all households in the city, including two local recycling centres. This all supports more sustainable consumption (goal 12).

Public health

We are responsible for public health services within the city and provide a range of services to help people live active and healthy lives (goal 3), including work on food and healthy diets (goal 2) and supporting sexual health services (goal 5) including the Haymarket Health clinic.

Transport

We play a key role in setting local transport strategy and developing transport infrastructure (goal 9), including the development of sustainable travel options (goal 11).

Estate and buildings

The council manages hundreds of buildings and sites across the city, which are vital to delivering our services. As part of our response to the climate emergency, we have a programme to reduce carbon emissions from our estate (goal 13).

Democratic services

As the local authority for Leicester, it is critical for us to provide strong governance and clear and transparent decision-making for the city. We deliver local elections, including for the City Mayor and councillors for each ward of the city (goal 16).

Economic regeneration

We play a key role in local economic regeneration, providing opportunities for local businesses to grow and innovate (goal 8). This includes a number of managed work spaces, which are let to small local businesses.

Sports and leisure

Leicester has six council-run sports and leisure centres, providing access to a wide range of sports and activities supporting health and well-being (goal 3). We are also responsible for 130 local parks, providing green space for local people and habitats for wildlife (goal 15).
