Fizz Free February
What is it?
We are supporting the Fizz Free February campaign and aiming to ditch sugary fizzy drinks for 28 days. Launched by Southwark Council in 2018, cutting out fizzy drinks for Fizz Free February is a great way to reduce your sugar intake.
Fizzy drinks can contain a lot of sugar meaning they can prevent you maintaining a healthy weight, they can cause tooth decay as well plus they can be really expensive!
Instead of your normal fizzy drink you could have:
- If you don’t like plain water then why don’t you add pieces of fresh fruit; like mint, cucumber or strawberries, to the water to flavour it slightly! (Avoid adding citrus fruits like oranges and lemons though – they can be acidic and damage your teeth)
- No added sugar squash
Drinking just one 330ml can of fizzy drink a day could add up to over a stone weight gain per year. Tooth decay is the leading cause for hospitalisation among 5-9 year olds in the UK, with 26,000 children being hospitalised each year due to tooth decay – in other words, 500 each week.
Did you know?
Sugar now makes up 13.5% of 4 to 10 year-olds and 14.1% of teenagers daily calorie intake respectively, while the official recommendation is to limit sugar to no more than 5%. (Latest data from Public Health England on the nation’s diet).
Children in Leicester have amongst the highest rates of tooth decay in England. In 2012, over half (54%) of 5-year-olds had tooth decay – this was the worst in England. Over the past few years the oral health of children has improved, but there are still nearly 40% of 5-year-olds who suffer with tooth decay (2017).
Make a pledge
By pledging to go fizz free in February, you may find that it helps you reduce your fizzy drink consumption for the rest of the year as well, meaning that you could save more than £400 a year if you stopped drinking one bottle of fizzy drink, per day for a year.
