The New Walk conservation area was designated in 1969, and is the second-largest conservation area in the city.
It was one of the first three conservation areas to be declared in Leicester. The area includes the whole of New Walk and Upper New Walk and also incorporates the area around Tower Street and Leicester Prison, and much of Regent Road and Princess Road.

Some properties in the 'new town' area are covered by the Holy Trinity Article 4 Direction which limits the rights of householders to carry out work to their properties without planning permission. A copy of this direction can be downloaded below.
