Walking in Leicester

We aim to encourage people to walk by introducing walking to school projects and community walking projects.

Further information

We are proud to say that a higher percentage of people walk to work in Leicester than in London, and we are keen to make that number grow.

We have received government funding for a number of schemes which promote walking in our city - a 'walk to school' scheme aimed at young people, and a summer walks initiative, where we encourage people to walk more every day.

There are a number of other ways we encourage people to get walking around Leicester.

We offer advice to any schools wanting to set up walking bus schemes. A walking bus is a group of children, who walk to school under the supervision of volunteers.

The walking bus follows a set route, stopping at agreed pick up points or 'bus stops' in the neighbourhood.

For more information on setting up walking buses in Leicester city, contact Lyn Rowe by email.

Walk Leicester Festival

29 April – 31 May 2018

The Walk Leicester Festival offers a varied programme of free and paid-for walks.

The festival aims to showcase all Leicester has to offer on foot – most sights and attractions are within a short stroll of the city centre – parks, woodlands, historic towns, villages and waterways.

With a mix of easy to challenging, urban to green spaces, self-guided to group or guided walks, there is something for all ages and abilities to enjoy.

The festival gets under way in New Market Square on 29 April at 11am with a Street Art Tour that celebrates the city’s unique art culture.

Many walks are suitable for wheelchair users and accessible to pushchairs. There are plenty of activities and trails for families and young walkers, such as nature walks led by a local expert.

The programme also includes educational history walks where you can learn what’s unique about the city, health walks at city parks led by a guide and fitness instructor offering advice on how to use outdoor gym equipment.

Walkers are encouraged to share their walking experiences via the Choose How You Move Facebook and Twitter using the #WalkLeicester hastag.

Tell us about your favourite walk

We would like you to tell us about your favourite Leicester walk. This will help us to paint a picture of the walking environment in the city and create a catalogue of walking routes for others to try. Your walk may feature in our Leicester’s Favourite Walks Guide set for release summer 2018. Your walk can be beyond the city boundary, but must be easy to reach from the city centre.
